Blackouts hit Russia's Belgorod as Ukrainian drone attacks surge

BBC News

Blackouts hit Russia's Belgorod as Ukrainian drone attacks surge Residents of Russia's Belgorod region say blackouts, air-raid sirens and the sound of gunfire aimed at incoming Ukrainian drones are becoming increasingly common, as Kyiv retaliates against repeated bombardments of its cities with cross-border strikes of its own. It's so loud and so terrifying, says Nina, a Belgorod resident who asked us to change her name. I was coming back from the clinic when a siren went off. As usual, I received Telegram alerts about a drone attack. Then bursts of automatic gunfire broke out, I ran into a nearby courtyard and tried to hide under an arch, she recalls.

Putin tells Trump Russia has to respond to Ukrainian attacks

The Japan Times

Russian President Vladimir Putin told U.S. President Donald Trump on Wednesday that he would have to respond to Ukrainian drone attacks on Russia's nuclear-capable bomber fleet, while also describing peace talks with Ukraine as "useful." The war in Ukraine is intensifying after nearly four months of cajoling and threats to both Moscow and Kyiv from Trump, who says he wants peace after more than three years of the deadliest conflict in Europe since World War II. After Ukraine bombed bridges and attacked Russia's fleet of bombers deep in Siberia and Russia's far north, Putin on Wednesday said he did not think Ukraine's leaders wanted peace.

Russia and Ukraine trade biggest drone attacks of conflict

Russia and Ukraine have both launched record drone attacks on each other overnight, with Ukrainian attacks on Moscow temporarily shutting down three of the Russian capital's airports. Russia fired 145 drones at Ukraine overnight, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said on Sunday – more than in any single nighttime attack so far during their two-and-a-half-year conflict. "Last night, Russia launched a record 145 Shaheds and other strike drones against Ukraine," Zelenskyy said on social media, urging Kyiv's Western allies to do more to help Ukraine's defence. Kyiv said its air defences downed 62 of the drones. Russia also said it had downed 34 Ukrainian attack drones targeting Moscow on Sunday, the largest attempted attack on the capital since the start of the offensive in 2022, with Moscow regional Governor Andrei Vorobyov calling the attack "massive".

Russian barrage targets Kyiv, Ukrainian strike destroys school

A Russian air attack has bombarded Kyiv in the latest attack on the Ukrainian capital. Ukraine's air defence units destroyed dozens of cruise and ballistic missiles early on Monday morning, the city's military administration said on the Telegram messaging app. Meanwhile, authorities in the Russian region of Belgorod said a Ukrainian attack destroyed a childcare facility, as the warring pair continue to swap air strikes. Ukrainian forces said that they destroyed 22 out of 35 missiles and 20 out of 23 attack drones over the Kyiv, Kharkiv, Dnipro, Poltava, Mykolaiv and Zaporizhzhia regions. Despite Kyiv's defensive action, the attack on the city produced a series of explosions, forcing residents into bomb shelters.

Ukrainian attack on ferry kills one in Russian port

BBC News

One person has been killed and others wounded in a Ukrainian drone attack on a ferry at port in southern Russia, the regional governor has said. Krasnodar governor Veniamin Kondratyev said the ferry had caught fire at Port Kavkaz but there was no risk of it spreading. The port lies a few kilometres from the Kerch bridge, which enables road and rail travel between Russia and the Crimean peninsula, which Russia illegally annexed in 2014. "Unfortunately there are injured and dead among the crew and port staff," Mr Kondratyev said. He added that emergency services were on the scene.

Russia says two children killed in Ukrainian attack on Belgorod

Al Jazeera

At least 10 people, including a child, have been killed and 45 injured following a Ukrainian attack on the centre of the Russian provincial capital of Belgorod, the Russian Emergencies Ministry has said. Governor Vyacheslav Gladkov said on Saturday that the attack on Belgorod, about 30km (19 miles) from the border with Ukraine, had hit a residential area. In a Telegram post, he urged all residents to move to air raid shelters as sirens sounded. Belgorod borders Ukraine's Luhansk, Sumy and Kharkiv regions, some of which were hit by Russian air raids on Ukraine on Friday, in what was one of the deadliest attacks since the war began in February 2022. The death toll has risen to 39 from those attacks.
